Stijn Kindt

I obtained my Bachelor degree Electrical engineering at UGent 2015-2018 and then went on to get my Master degree in Electrical engineering – Communications and information technology UGent 2018-2020. PhD student: Robust speech capture and enhancement using ad hoc distributed microphone arrays by integrating and embedding domain-specific signal models within deep-learning frameworks UGent 2020-current

Working on:

At the start, I worked on a project in collaboration with Barco where we designed beamformers to fit their requirements. I also worked on sound source localisation with distributed microphone arrays. More specifically, we showed that cooperation between the arrays, in the form of sharing part of their neural networks, had a great benefit on the localisation accuracy. Work was also done on sound capturing with a drone carried microphone array. The extremely low SNR levels make it challenging, but iterative MVDR beamforming brought some improvements to the system. finally, I worked to improve separation of closely spaced sources. Providing auxiliary direction of arrival improved the performance. Now, I’m going more to ad-hoc, distributed microphone arrays, where I want to improve upon microphone clusterings in order to improve source separation techniques.

About me:

In my free time, I like to play board games. “the taverns of tiefenthal”, “the quest for el dorado” and “Stone age” are among my favourites. On a more competitive level, I play Draughts, where I’m a member of “WDC Heule”.

On vacations, I like to hike in nature.
